An Amsler Grid is a good home screening test for age related macular degeneration and some other eye diseases, e.g optic nerve diseases, abnormal color vision, a space-taking pathology, e.g. a tumor. It is by no means intended to be used as a diagnostic tool. It is important to consult with an eyecare professional on any changes in eyesight.

Amsler Grids in black and white are useful with 90% of the population; red and black Amsler Grids may be better for someone with Diabetic Retinopathy, Optic Nerve, Chiasmal or Toxic Amblyopia related problems.

Using an Amsler Grid is quite simple. You stare at the center dot, with one eye closed, standing at a distance that is a comfortable reading distance, about 12" - 14" away from the grid. If any of the lines are wavy, blurry, or any areas of the Grid are missing or dark, or any corners or sides are not clearly visible, it is advisable to consult an eyecare professional for diagnosis and recommendations. Repeat for the other eye. It is advisable to do this simple test monthly.

If a person wears glasses, they should wear them. Note, bi-focal lenses and transition lenses can interfere with using an Amsler Grid. Sometimes taking these glasses off can rectify some distortions.

It cannot be stressed enough that the Amsler Grid is ONLY a SIMPLE check and by all means, inconclusive. ONLY an eyecare professional can determine if there is any change in the macula or in a person's eyesight. Therefore, it is recommended that an eyecare professional be consulted at least yearly to evaluate a person's eye sight and conditions.

The vinyl decals are very affordable; they can be easily mailed, in a #10 envelope, with other communication materials, or distributed at large venues, e.g. health fairs, exhibits/tradeshows, conventions.
